The Tangier medina is smaller and easier than those of Fez or Marrakech, but its history is unique: a crossroads between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, an International Zone from 1923 to 1956, a refuge for writers and artists.
A classic route links the Grand Socco (Place du 9 Avril 1947), the Mendoubia gardens, the Petit Socco and its cafés and the American Legation, then climbs to the kasbah and the museum in the former sultan’s palace (Dar el-Makhzen), with views across the Strait.
